Wedge Calibration Protocol

Stop guessing inside 100 yards. Build a systematic matrix.

The difference between an 8 handicap and a 15 handicap is not driver distance. It is performance inside 100 yards. When a good player is 65 yards out, they do not "feel" a shot. They select a specific wedge and a specific swing length that they know produces exactly 65 yards of carry.

This protocol will help you build your own Wedge Matrix using the Pelz Clock System.

The Clock System

Imagine your body is the center of a clock face. Your feet are at 6 o'clock. Your head is at 12 o'clock. We are going to establish three distinct lengths for your backswing (left arm position for a right-handed golfer):

  • 7:30 Position: Left arm just past the right leg. (Short pitch).
  • 9:00 Position: Left arm parallel to the ground. (Half swing).
  • 10:30 Position: Left arm pointing to the sky. (Three-quarter/Full swing).

The downswing is always the same: accelerating through the ball to a full finish. You control distance only by the length of the backswing.

The Calibration Process

You need an hour at a driving range, ideally with a launch monitor (or very clear target flags).

  1. Take your Sand Wedge. Hit 10 balls using only the 7:30 swing. Throw out the worst 3 strikes. Average the carry distance of the remaining 7. Write it down.
  2. Hit 10 balls with the Sand Wedge using the 9:00 swing. Average the best 7. Write it down.
  3. Hit 10 balls with the Sand Wedge using the 10:30 swing. Average the best 7. Write it down.
  4. Repeat this process for your Lob Wedge, Gap Wedge, and Pitching Wedge.

Building the Matrix

When you finish, you will have a matrix that looks something like this (distances will vary):

Club 7:30 Swing 9:00 Swing 10:30 Swing
Lob Wedge (58°) 25 yds 45 yds 65 yds
Sand Wedge (54°) 35 yds 55 yds 80 yds
Gap Wedge (50°) 45 yds 75 yds 95 yds
Pitching Wedge (46°) 55 yds 90 yds 115 yds

Now, when your laser rangefinder says 75 yards to the pin, you don't have to guess. You look at your matrix, pull the Gap Wedge, and execute a 9:00 swing. It removes anxiety and guarantees you will be pin-high.

Pro Tip: Tape a small piece of paper with your matrix to the shaft of your wedge or the back of your rangefinder.
