Amateurs often buy clubs based on maximum distance, resulting in a cluster of clubs at the top of the bag (e.g., Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, 3 Hybrid) that all travel within 10 yards of each other, while leaving massive 20+ yard gaps in their scoring irons and wedges.
Proper gapping ensures you have a club for every yardage without having to drastically alter your swing mechanics (e.g., "trying to hit a hard 8-iron").
