Walk down any public driving range and look at the bags. You will see rows of 9.0° and 10.5° drivers. You will also see rows of players struggling to carry the ball past the 200-yard marker.
The ego of the amateur golfer is heavily tied to the driver. But playing equipment designed for players swinging 115mph+ is mathematically handicapping you.
The Data on Amateur Swing Speeds
According to the USGA Distance Insights report (2023) and Trackman aggregate data, the average male golfer swings a driver at approximately 93 mph.

Why Lower Swing Speeds Need More Loft
Distance is a combination of ball speed, launch angle, and spin. If your ball speed is relatively low (due to a 93mph swing speed), the only way to maximize carry distance is to keep the ball in the air longer.
If you hit a 9-degree driver at 93mph, the ball simply will not launch high enough or spin enough to stay airborne. It will fall out of the sky like a knuckleball, robbing you of 15-20 yards of carry distance.

The Slice Mitigation Factor
There is a secondary, perhaps more important benefit to loft: it masks spin axis tilts.
The more loft a club has, the harder it is to slice. (This is why it's almost impossible to slice a pitching wedge, but very easy to slice a 3-iron). By moving from a 9.0° to a 12.0° driver, you are significantly reducing the destructive lateral spin that causes the ball to curve into the trees.
